Users
As of 29 Oct 2026: Multiple users in NULLos are still being built. This page shows what already works in QEMU
and what does not yet.
Who am I?
id
uid=0 gid=0 groups=0
After starting, you are the administrator (number 0, root). Your home folder is /. Logging in with name and
password at startup does not exist yet.
Even the administrator may not do everything in NULLos. Every program may only do what is in its ID card (Ausweis). More on this in
Security.
Creating users
usr add bert -s /bin/s
usr list
bert 1001 1001 /home/bert /bin/s
| Command | What it does |
usr list | all users |
usr show NAME | details, including whether a password is set |
usr add NAME | create a user |
usr del NAME | delete a user |
id NAME | number and groups of a user |
New users get a number from 1000 up, their own group and a locked password.
What does not work yet (as of 29 Oct 2026): coming soon
usr add does not create the home folder yet. It reports „Heimordner nicht angelegt“ ("home folder not created").
- Without
-s /bin/s the new user gets /bin/sh as shell. But in NULLos sh is the command for
showing files, not the shell. So always give -s /bin/s.
- The users are stored in
/etc/passwd. That lives in memory and is gone after a restart.
As another user
su -c id bert
uid=1001(bert) gid=1001(bert) groups=1001(bert)
su runs a command as another user. The administrator does not need a password for this. A single command
already works this way. Several commands in a row (su -c "pr hallo; id" bert) are currently still rejected.
